A night I don’t forget

Meeting with friends On Wednesday, the 14 th of June 2017, I had a plan to meet with some of my friends at Pizza House after breaking the iftar to discuss the upcoming Fermaato Annual Iftar in 2017. Fermaato Annual Iftar is a yearly communal iftar dinner organized by the youth of Mogadishu. I managed in time to take a pie and a cup of tea to break my fast after the evening prayer at my home, so I could go to the restaurant quickly. I vividly remember the remarkable words said by my wife as I was on the move, “Abdiweli, please take a shower before you leave, you were fasting all the day and you shouldn’t meet your friends with such appearance.” Reluctantly, I replied with a word I mostly use, “Don’t worry dear, if I don’t take shower for five days, there won’t be any change on my body at all”. My Work Trip to Nairobi Work travel is not always as flexible as a personal trip. I made plans to travel to Nairobi on 16 th March 2020. It was not an unusual expedition but a routine work trip. I had a few days to complete my assignment. I arrived late in the afternoon and passengers were lined up to get their temperatures checked. I felt nervous and there was one guy behind me who had to get his temperature checked twice due to the anxiety he was experiencing but fortunately we were allowed to proceed. Sure, many of us had the same worries and concerns over growing fears of the COVID-19 virus outbreak and the pandemic was already starting to spread across parts of East Africa, with numerous confirmed cases in Nairobi. My memory of 14 October 2017: Two Years Ago From Today It was Saturday, 14 October 2017. I had a meeting with my friends Abdifatah Hassan Ali and Alinor Abdi at Safari hotel close to Zobe junction in Mogadishu for lunch and then scheduled to stop over at KM13 outside of Mogadishu. I was the first person to come to the hotel and took my lunch. People were sitting in groups, chit-chatting and having fun; while I was sitting alone enjoying the breeze waiting for my friends. After my friends finally arrived, we ordered some fruit and juice drinks. As were conversing – we called a nearby shoe-shiner to shine our shoes before we left for a mission, but unfortunately, he excused himself and said: “I am not feeling well today, could you please come to me in the afternoon?” We simply replied it is ok.
